Salmon fishing is more difficult than many other types of fishing. Even the most experienced fisherman has difficulties when salmon fishing for the first time. Learn a few very important salmon fishing tips, put them to work and start eating fresh caught salmon before you know it.

Proper fishing gear and bait

Use a strong and flexible fishing pole suitable for salmon fishing. Salmon are strong and you do not want your fishing pole to snap. Do not use regular fishing line, instead use fluorocarbon fishing line. Fluorocarbon fishing line is stronger than regular fishing line and more difficult for salmon to see. Salmon have very thick jaws, so use hooks made for salmon and steelhead. Fishing hooks made for salmon and steelhead are stronger and sharper than regular fishing hooks. Success also depends on the type of bait you use, many fishermen recommend salmon roe or eggs. Remember to bring a large ice chest to keep your catch fresh.

Multiple fishing lines

Salmon swim in packs, so use multiple lines. Bring a friend with you to have help pulling in and watching the multiple fishing lines. When using multiple lines do not forget to check the local laws about the maximum amount of lines you are allowed.

Time of day

When it is bright and sunny out, salmon gather in dark areas and deep holes. Since salmon avoid the sunlight, you do better to fish on cloudy days, very early in the morning or early to late evening. Once again, check the local laws, because some localities place restrictions on the time of day you are allowed to fish.

Safety

Like with any type of fishing, safety is the most important tip of all. You want to catch fish, not end up in the hospital or worse. If you are fishing for salmon on the shore, use thick, tough and good quality fishing waders. If you will are traveling offshore, use a heavy boat suitable for offshore salmon fishing and know how to operate it. Always use a life jacket, even if you are fishing on the shore in shallow water.
