Virginia River Fishing

The top two rivers for Virginia river fishing are the James River and the New River. Both rivers are renowned for their bass populations, including both large and small mouth bass.

The New River

The New River is known for its abundant populations of a variety of freshwater fish. The largest populations of fish in this river are small mouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish and walleye. Anglers fishing this river have a great chance at setting a new state record for the largest fish caught in the state. Jigs, spinner baits and live baits are the recommended baits for this river as they attract many different types of fish.

The James River

The James River is mainly fished by people hoping to catch small mouth bass, although other types of bass are present in the river. The fishing is great throughout the year in the mountain and flat stretches of the river. Muskies are stocked every year in the James River, but they are still somewhat rare to catch. Catfish are also found, especially around the Lynchburg area. Most anglers use canoes or other small boats to fish these waters, but fly fishing from the banks of the river is also allowed.
